Clogged Toilets
Clogged toilets may be caused for several reasons, but the most frequent
causes are:
A special note; if you flush your toilet and the waste comes up in another
toilet, sink, shower or tub, the toilet itself is not clogged. You have a clog
further down the line, probably in your main sewer line.
For the do-it-yourselfer, steps to clear a clogged toilet are as follows:
-
For a toilet in good shape, a good plunger is the first
choice. When a plunger is used correctly, it will force a surge of water down
the toilet and hopefully move the clog down to the main sewer line. But be
careful; if the clog does not move, the surge of water needs to go somewhere,
possibly splashing back at you.
-
If the clog is too stubborn for a plunger, the next step
is to use a toilet auger (also known as a snake or cable). The toilet requires a
special auger, due to the potential risk of chipping or cracking the toilet.
-
If the other techniques do not work, the last resort is
to disconnect and pull the toilet to clear the clog. This allows access into the
toilet and main sewer line, and allows for the use of other methods and more
powerful line cleaning equipment.
We recommend extreme caution when using any of the above referenced
techniques and tools. If you do not feel comfortable doing it yourself, do not
know how to perform these recommendations, or are not successful, give us a
call. It will be our pleasure to service your needs.
