Green Plumbing - Saving Water

In today's age of decreasing water supplies, increasingly tough water restrictions in many areas of California are forcing people to take a look at their water usage within the home. Even if your area doesn't currently have water restrictions, water is a valuable commodity that shouldn't be wasted. By taking a look at your existing plumbing and seeing where you can improve, you can save water, money and the environment.

Green. . .

By taking care of simple plumbing problems, you can save significant amounts of water.

  • Leaky, runny toilets may be the biggest water waster in the home. Click here to see how much water a leaky, runny toilet can waste.
  • Dripping faucets also waste water. Whether the faucet be in the kitchen, bathroom or garden, stopping the drip will yield savings.
  • Any type of leak, whether from a pipe, toilet or faucet should be repaired. Not only do they waste water, they are an emergency waiting to happen.

. . . and Greener

Older plumbing fixtures use more water.

  • Older toilets use any where from 3 to 5 gallons per flush. New toilets are required to us 1.6 gallons per flush, plus the flushing action is better. Some new toilets use only 1.3 gallons per flush.
  • Older shower heads use more water. Replacing old shower heads with new low flow heads are recommended.
  • Older faucets run at a higher flow rate than newer faucets, much of which may go down the drain.

New devices normally not found on older systems also save water.

  • Getting hot water to the bathroom is inconvenient and costly. Recirculation systems provide instant hot water. And advances in technology have made some systems reasonably priced.
  • High water pressure can force water where it is not intended to be. If water pressure is above 75 psi, a pressure reducing valve is recommended. Having the correct water pressure also reduces wear and tear on the entire plumbing system, including fixtures.
